Finding Delight at a Colonoscopy

Propel water, laxative powder, and extra strength gas relief for colonoscopy prep
For those of you at least 45 years old, this photo needs no explanation.

Mark had a routine colonoscopy on Friday, so Thursday and Friday morning was prep time for him, which means it was support-the-guy-who's-prepping-for-a-colonoscopy time for me.

Like all other reasonable people, neither of us has "colonoscopy" on our Top Ten Things I Enjoy lists. And also, isn't it amazing we have access to screening and technology that can help us better know what's going on inside our bodies? Maybe I more deeply appreciate this because my grandfather and both of his sisters (my great aunts) all had colon cancer.

Because colonoscopies include general anaesthesia, I was Mark's trusted driver on Friday. This meant I was with him during prep and recovery, when he was cared for by two fantastic nurses, Chris and Martika. Chris and Martika were Delights, and if we hadn't been in a healthcare facility where taking photos is restricted, I would've asked permission for photos and to share them both as #SharedDelightsGrow. Instead you're going to have to settle for the photo above of the prep materials and my words about how delighted Mark and I were by the time we spent with Chris and Martika.

Chris and Martika were fantastic at their jobs while being funny and human. They were kind and compassionate while keeping it moving. They made the whole experience of a colonoscopy better because of how they showed up and related to Mark and me. Mark wasn't "the colonoscopy in Room 9." He was "Mark, who's here for a colonoscopy."

I'm grateful for the Delights practice, which opens me up to notice delights among the mundane. These moments of Delight fuel joy, which keeps me steady in the midst of all the hard stuff that makes up daily life. Loretta and I will be talking about how to find joy to power your life and practice at next week's freely-offered CLE.

I'm not saying you'll look forward to your next colonoscopy if you attend... and also, we'll teach you the basics of the Delights practice, so you can notice what delights you as you navigate all the stuff you do in your daily life, like prepping for and getting a screening colonoscopy.
