When I started high school in August 1990 in Greenwood, Indiana, I was lucky to be welcomed into a community of band members who knew and loved lots more music than I did. They taught me that there was more to listen to on my yellow Sony Walkman Sports than New Kids on the Block.
Some of the bands, like Chicago, weren't my jam. Some of them, like Rush, were intriguing but didn't hit me in the guts. One of them, R.E.M., landed right in my guts and stopped me in my tracks.
One of my prize possessions was a R.E.M. bumper sticker that I held onto, rather than sticking on my trombone case or a notebook, to put on my first car. I deeply loved Mike, Bill, Peter, and Michael. Now I understand that I deeply love the music that Mike, Bill, Peter, and Michael made and shared with us.

Yesterday, I learned about something that is simultaneously horrifying and very cool: R.E.M. has released a remix of their first single, Radio Free Europe. The very cool part is that Radio Free Europe was released 45 years ago, and this remix is by Jacknife Lee, who produced their final two albums. The horrifying part is that this is a fundraiser for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty who had their Congressionally-appropriated funding frozen in March by the Trump Administration.
