About the event
Speaking up when you disagree isn’t always easy, especially in a profession where decisions carry significant weight and expectations are high. Dissenting opinions give judges a way to challenge the majority, raise concerns that might otherwise go unheard, and preserve an alternative perspective for the future.
This session explores three landmark dissents — Dred Scott v. Sandford, Plessy v. Ferguson, and Shelby County v. Holder — and the courage it can take to speak when your perspective differs from the majority.
We’ll connect the power of dissent to the everyday experiences of people working throughout the legal profession. When professionals can express concerns, advocate for their values, and use their voice constructively, they can maintain a greater sense of agency, integrity, and connection to purpose.
Participants will consider how finding and using their voice can support their well-being while allowing them to remain engaged in difficult and meaningful work.
